From PlaceEngine to Location Amplifier: Rolling Out Commercial Location Based Services

Keynote Abstract
After spinning out our PlaceEngine research project to establish a commercial Wi-Fi based location framework, we have been building various location based services in Japan.  One such service, Location Amplifier, is a service framework that enhances your personal experience by unobtrusively pushing location based content to your mobile device. Your mobile device turns into an "amplifier" that presents you with rich content from the network based on your location to augment your real world experience.  Users' lifestyles can be enhanced by providing practical applications via Location Amplifier such as way-finding and guide services, but it can also bring the real-world experience closer to the user in fun and otherwise unexplored ways.

In this talk, we will present through demos, how we have showcased Location Amplifier for navigating on trains in Tokyo, exploring a city-wide environment in Yokohama, and experiencing rich content in sports venues and conventions halls. Users can interact with the environment by using their PSPs or iPhones. Finally, with our Location Amplifier framework we can also analyze user behavior patterns based on location to provide recommendations and feedback accordingly.

Biography:
Dr. Atsushi Shionozaki received his PhD in Computer Science from Keio University in 1995.  He joined Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc. (Sony CSL) in Tokyo focusing on Internet protocol research. In 2000, he joined Stanford Networking Research Center as a researcher in residence representing Sony. After returning to Sony CSL in Tokyo in 2004, he started working on the wireless LAN locationware platform PlaceEngine with other lab members. In 2007, he left Sony CSL to start Koozyt, Inc. to market PlaceEngine in the business world and spawn off other location based technologies.  He is a founding member and CTO of Koozyt, Inc.
